Stainless steel use for water storage safe for health

Use of stainless steel to supply and store drinking water is a safe way to consume the natural resource, industry body ISSDA said today.

Highlighting properties of stainless steel, Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA) President K K Pahuja said most urban centres have been facing deficiencies in the water supply system. A lot of water is wasted due to leakages and corrosion of pipes.

He was speaking at the event Stainless Steel for Water Service Pipelines, Treatment and Storage 2017.

Minister of State for Steel Vishnu Deo Sai said, “Safe drinking water has been a grave problem across the country where lack of usable water has resulted in decade-old sanitation and health problems. Potable water gets contaminated due to corrosive water pipelines.”

Pahuja said people must start using stainless steel pipes for water supply as well as storage of drinking water as stainless steel is corrosion-free, which is why it is good for both supply and storage.

Stainless steel provides cost-effective solution to water management and does not generate impurity, he added.

Also, leakages through plastic water pipes lead to water loss in transmission. Stainless steel water pipes are corrosion free, strong, durable and recyclable, he said further.
